Day 5

Surprise, surprise, surprise!  Another Hollywood Records excursion nets two albums and a pair of 12" singles - I guess I was a creature of habit at the ripe old age of 18.  Planet P's self-titled album was a must-buy for the epic space paranoia of "Why Me?".  Bow Wow Wow's I Want Candy has occupied a special place in my mind ever since that one rainy day back in 1982, the single greatest year in music history, people. A Dance Remix of  Bruuuuuuuce's "Dancing In The Dark" by Arthur Baker?  Sure, I'll bite.  Baker brought the drums for sure.  And speaking of drums, Ms. Escovedo always brings 'em.  "The Belle Of St. Mark" is a catchy track off her debut album and the remix does a body good.  The flipside offered up the instrumental jam "Too Sexy" which could have been the sonic blueprint for Ready For The World's "Oh Sheila".  Wait, is that why they called it that?

RECORD STATUS:
The staff of Hollywood became friends of mine after hours of in-depth conversations and record playing there in the store.  I'd take a record up to the counter and ask them to play it.  They'd check the open inventory, the promos and the returns and play one of those if it was there but on more than a few occasions the shrink wrap was broken on the spot.  Pretty sure I ended up buying each of those instant requests.  So worth it.  Both Planet P (which became Planet P Project shortly after their debut) and Bow Wow Wow were replaced by CDs while the 12" singles remain in the collection to this day.

Planet P - Planet P (1983)

I Want Candy - Bow Wow Wow (1982) (all but final track "King Kong")

"Dancing In The Dark" (12") - Bruce Springsteen (1984)

"Belle Of St. Mark" (12") b/w "Too Sexy" - Sheila E. (1984)

The TOTAL TALLY:
records bought: 15
    money spent: $95.22

  1. Believe it or not, that Sheila E. b-side was new to me. Thank you for mentioning it and sharing the YouTube link. It is a very funky instrumental. I can definitely see the Ready For the World similarities.

  2. That Springsteen 12" is worth the price of admission just for the cheesy cover pics, especially the back cover where Bruce does his best Michael Jackson imitation. Love it! I guess the marketing dept vetoed the blacked-out cover of Springsteen actually dancing in the dark.
