HERC Sr. owned three Beatles albums on 8-track: 1962-1966 (aka the RED album), 1967-1970 (aka the BLUE album) and Hey Jude. He listened to them frequently and these were the seeds of my lifelong obsession with the Fab Four and music in general. While at the Base Exchange (BX) on this fine day in 1985, I picked up 1962-1966. My copy was not the 1978 red vinyl edition nor the original 1973 pressing. According to pictures I found online, my copy is a second pressing from 1976.
The Red album was not my first Beatles album. That honour goes to Rock 'N' Roll Music, a gift from 1976. According to my index card catalog of albums purchased, I purchased three more Beatles albums before 1962-1966, including 20 Greatest Hits (1982), Love Songs (1977) and Revolver (1966).
The Beatles: 1962-1966 (2LP) - The Beatles (1973)
I did eventually acquire the red vinyl variation but sold it (and it's big blue brother) for a ridiculous amount late in 1987 (see sidebar). When the album was released on CD in 1993, I bought it the first day - think it cost $35. When it was reissued in 2010, I bought it again but paid only $20. I still have both CD versions and the very same vinyl copy I bought on this day back in 1985.
The TOTAL TALLY:
records bought: 160
money spent: $830.72
