Used to have a TG&Y store with a decent record department about a quarter mile from my back door but it closed in 1983 or 1984. Used to walk over there browse through the records then hit the toy/hobby shop next door before ending up at Safeway and buying a box of Peanut Butter Carnation Breakfast Bars. Sometimes I'd stop by Susie-Bill's Paperback Exchange, literally a couple hundred feet from my back door, and pick up some cheap reads. These are my two favorite TG&Y purchases and indeed two of my favorite albums to this day:

After the demise of TG&Y, Hollywood became the default closest record store. On this trip, it was all about the singles.
"Nightshift" (7") - The Commodores (1985)
"Send Me And Angel" (12") - Real Life (1983)
"Sugar Walls" (12") - Sheena Easton (1985)
"Easy Lover" (12") - Philip Bailey with Phil Collins (1985)
- The Commodores musical tribute to Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye was fresh off the truck; the guy said it had just come in on Monday. It was my favorite song for about a week back then.
- "Send Me An Angel" remains a haunting song and this original extended version is still a great listen and I actually prefer it to the very similar sounding 1989 version which was the bigger hit.
- After seeing her perform on The Tonight Show, Prince sent Sheena Easton the song "Sugar Walls" and asked her if she wanted to record it. She did, they did and the twelve inch single features two remixes labeled Dance Mix and Red Mix. The song is notorious for being one of two Prince-penned songs featured on the original list of songs that led to those Parental Advisory labels.
- Very few artists have dominated the charts the way Phil Collins did in the Eighties, appearing on more Top 40 hits than any other artist during the decade. In addition to his own solo joints, he had hits with Genesis as well as drumming on, writing and producing hit tracks for Adam Ant, Howard Jones and Frida. He even found time to record the genre-crossing "Easy Lover" with Philip Bailey, one of the voices behind Earth, Wind & Fire.

I still have the "Nightshift" 45 as well as the twelve inch single pictured above. The Real Life and Philip & Phil singles are long gone on vinyl but I still have them on CD. Because of Prince's involvement, the Sheena Easton record has enjoyed protected status in the collection for all these years.
